10 – Long Distance Relationships

Just a few minutes ago, I had a small chat with my classmates here on the topic of having long distance relationships, since a past relationship of one person in this room [where I'm currently typing this article] was a long distance relationship. And with that thought, I’d like to share my thoughts on long distance relationships. [Since I'm too much at being random, and thoughts posted here just came out like mushrooms.]

And I JUST had a debate with myself on this topic. I really think that long distance relationships won’t work out. Still, I think that it depends on both parties, whether they make it work out or not. And for me, these two arguments are both valid. Because of varied factors, a long distance relationship wouldn’t work, but still, because of the factor of how we people can get persistent when it comes to these kinds of things, it could still work out, right?

Which gives me my conclusion, after thinking for a little ten minutes:
We really don’t need to think about these things too much. Looking at a romantic perspective, we really shouldn’t rationalize these things, because these concerns are felt, not though of. And looking at my present practical perspective, I’m still at a young age of 19, these things shouldn’t be my concern at this time. Hey, I should be studying for three exams tomorrow. See? I wouldn’t want to dwell too much in this for now.

Ironically, I made a 250-word post on this topic. Weird, huh?

Ok, my two cents on LDRs. You can expect it to be really romantic at first. Like, every time you see each other, you will feel like a million bucks, like the birds are singing extra loud just for you. When you say good-bye, it will be super tragic, but you’ll kind of enjoy the sadness of it, because sometimes it’s nice to feel a little tortured, especially if it’s because you’re in love. You’ll buy webcams and video chat on various sites, on the Facebook Video Chat Rounds app ( http://apps.facebook.com/chatrounds/ ). Sometimes you’ll fall asleep in front of the computer. Then at some point you or she won’t be able to talk at a time you said you’d talk and you’ll be wracked with jealousy. What’s she doing? who’s she with? Has she lost interest? Has she met someone else? You’ll send her a text message and agonize until she responds.

Maybe this doesn’t sound that pleasant. But that’s just the worst of it. The good parts will be that you’ll get to maintain your independence while at the same time having a partner to back you up. You won’t have to show her your “dirty laundry” all the time, as it were. You can always make sure to clean your apartment before she comes over. You’ll never see her ugly underwear.

Hmm, why do I find myself posting random stuff on this blog every now and then? Anyways…

In the last 3 years of my life I have literally been moving around the world, and still, I have had a relationship going for 5 years now. We had our ups and downs of course, but I overall I have found it very easy to keep it going. Based on my experience here is “How to work a long distance relationship in 3 easy steps”:

1 – Keep in touch
2 – Visit frequently

Now, this is the critical part:

3 – Don’t make the other side jealous: I cannot stress this enough. Even the smallest thing gets out of control in no time and you find yourself in a big mess. Be careful what you say on the phone, make sure you word it properly, explain everything! I had countless instances of this.

Once when we were casually talking I told my gf that some girl in a night club patted me on the back and I ended up spilling some beer on my new shirt (she was just trying to get me to move out of her way, I don’t even remember why I told her this). Now my girlfriend is hardly possessive or anything, but the next thing I know, she had come up with a scenario you would find in a cheap porn movie. I had to explain for hours on end that I just had a beer with a male dominant population of computer scientists and engineers (as opposed to getting it on with 5 hot girls in the back room). And the worst part is, I didn’t even know this until she broke down and started crying & yelling at me the next week! Gestures and tone really make your conversation. The lack of these, combined with the frustration of the physical distance make everyone’s fantasies run wild. And if you are the kind that deliberately tries to make your partner jealous, well, DON’T. It works against you in long distance.
